A coalition of free-market organizations has written to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Paul S. Atkins in support of the agency’s proposed rule letting public companies report to investors every six months instead of every quarter. Filed July 6, 2026, as a public comment on the proposal (File No. S7-2026-15), the letter asks the Commission to give companies that choice.

The coalition argues that the quarterly mandate is costly and out of step with most other countries, a burden that handicaps U.S. firms and their investors. Citing the SEC’s own economic analysis, the letter notes that a company moving to semiannual reports would save about $198,000 a year on average, money it could put toward growth, and that lower costs could encourage more companies to go and stay public. It adds that anti-fraud rules and prompt disclosure of material events stay in place, and casts the change as a matter of investor choice. The Southwest Public Policy Institute joined the coalition, which the Competitive Enterprise Institute led.
