Our Work
At the Southwest Public Policy Institute, our research and advocacy drive meaningful change in policy and practice. By championing liberty, transparency, and innovation, we tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing the American Southwest. Here’s a look at some of our impactful work.
No Loan For You!
No Loan For You! examines how restrictive lending regulations in New Mexico harm consumers, particularly those needing small-dollar loans for emergencies. Through a firsthand investigation, SPPI President Patrick M. Brenner revealed significant barriers within traditional banking systems, despite having excellent credit. The report underscores the vital role of alternative financial services in providing essential access to credit for unbanked and underbanked populations, challenging the narrative that these services are inherently “predatory.”
No Loan For You, TOO!
No Loan For You, Too! expands on SPPI’s original study, examining how restrictive lending regulations and price controls harm consumer access to credit. By investigating credit unions and states like Minnesota, the report highlights systemic barriers, hidden costs, and eligibility hurdles that make it difficult for unbanked and underbanked individuals to secure small-dollar loans. It underscores how interest rate caps and similar policies reduce credit options, pushing consumers toward riskier or more expensive alternatives.
The HILL
The Supreme Court has emboldened the CFPB, threatening American consumers
In The Hill, Patrick M. Brenner critiques the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) funding structure, arguing it enables overreach under Director Rohit Chopra. He warns that the CFPB’s broad directives threaten essential price comparison platforms like Expedia and Angie’s List, which protect consumers by enhancing transparency and competition. Brenner contends the CFPB’s actions risk creating regulatory burdens and marketplace confusion, calling for rigorous oversight to halt its overreach and safeguard consumer choice and digital innovation.
