PHOENIX, AZ—The Southwest Public Policy Institute (SPPI) commends the departure of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra, marking the end of an era of regulatory overreach that has harmed consumers, businesses, and financial institutions alike.
“Rohit Chopra’s termination is long overdue.”
Patrick M. Brenner, President of the Southwest Public Policy Institute
“Rohit Chopra’s termination is long overdue,” said Patrick M. Brenner, President of the Southwest Public Policy Institute. “Under his leadership, the CFPB has abandoned its original mission and instead engaged in regulatory overreach, punitive enforcement actions, and mission creep into sectors far beyond its intended scope.”
During his tenure, Chopra’s CFPB imposed billions of dollars in unprecedented fines, passed down to consumers through higher banking fees, reduced credit card rewards, and restricted access to essential financial services. The agency’s failure to safely manage data, coupled with its expansion into non-financial digital marketplaces and fintech platforms, has also jeopardized innovation and consumer choice, stifling economic opportunity and free-market competition.
“The actions taken by the CFPB under Chopra’s leadership will have lasting negative consequences for American consumers,” Brenner continued. “By raising the cost of financial products and limiting access to credit, the CFPB has done more harm than good. The best consumer protection is competition, not burdensome government intervention.”
SPPI joins the growing calls—including Elon Musk’s ‘Delete CFPB’ stance—to rein in the CFPB and dismantle it entirely. With Chopra gone, President Donald Trump can appoint a new CFPB director committed to gutting the agency from within, curbing its regulatory overreach, and restoring financial freedom to American consumers.
“The CFPB is a failed experiment of progressive overregulation,” concluded Brenner. “If Congress cannot act to eliminate it, then the next best course of action is to neutralize it from within.”
