Washington, DC—The Southwest Public Policy Institute (SPPI) announced today the publication of a new opinion column in The Washington Post by SPPI President Patrick M. Brenner, examining President Donald Trump’s nomination of former Congressman Steve Pearce to lead the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The column, titled New Mexico knows Trump’s BLM nominee. Back away. appeared in the Post today, November 18, 2025.

In the op-ed, Brenner outlines concerns about Mr. Pearce’s leadership record in New Mexico and the potential consequences of his appointment to an agency responsible for more than 245 million acres of public land and nearly 700 million acres of mineral rights.

“New Mexico has already seen the effects of Mr. Pearce’s leadership on political institutions, stakeholder relationships, and organizational stability,” Brenner said. “The Bureau of Land Management requires proven administrative competence and the ability to build consensus among diverse Western communities. Nothing in his record reflects that.”

In conjunction with the publication of the op-ed, SPPI has transmitted letters to each member of New Mexico’s congressional delegation — Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján— urging them to oppose Mr. Pearce’s nomination during the Senate confirmation process.

While the Southwest Public Policy Institute is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and does not engage in partisan political activity, it may participate in nonpartisan lobbying on matters of public policy and federal governance.

“Our request is grounded in the serious policy implications of this appointment,” Brenner added. “BLM decisions shape the livelihoods of ranchers, tribal communities, conservationists, energy producers, and families across our state. New Mexico deserves a director who brings unity, credibility, and competence to the job.”

The letters provided to the delegation include SPPI’s analysis of Mr. Pearce’s record and concerns raised in The Washington Post op-ed. SPPI stands ready to provide further research or technical assistance as the confirmation process progresses.
