SPPI Announces New Partnership with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck

This new partnership comes with SPPI’s latest effort to enforce transparency with the Colorado Attorney General’s office.

The Southwest Public Policy Institute (SPPI) is pleased to announce that it has officially submitted a 14-day notice of intent to sue the Colorado Attorney General’s office under the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA). This legal action is in response to the denial of SPPI’s requests to inspect public records made on March 18 and March 22, 2024. SPPI believes that the Attorney General’s office has improperly withheld these records, which are critical for ensuring government transparency and accountability.

The increased “consumer advocacy” activities by the Colorado Attorney General’s office have raised significant concerns about potential overreach and lack of transparency. SPPI’s requests aimed to obtain detailed information regarding the AG’s enforcement actions and communications related to consumer complaints and settlements announced in a March 2024 press release. By denying access to these records, the AG’s office has obstructed efforts to assess the fairness and transparency of its consumer protection initiatives.

“We are committed to holding government entities accountable and ensuring transparency in all aspects of their operations.”

President of the Southwest Public Policy Institute

SPPI has retained the law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP to navigate this legal matter. Leading this effort is Sarah J. Auchterlonie, a renowned expert in consumer finance law and the chair of Brownstein’s Consumer Protection Group. Ms. Auchterlonie brings decades of experience working with federal and state financial services regulators and has a proven track record of successfully resolving high-stakes legal disputes.

Patrick M. Brenner, President of SPPI, stated, “We are committed to holding government entities accountable and ensuring transparency in all aspects of their operations. Partnering with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck and leveraging Sarah Auchterlonie’s extensive expertise will significantly enhance our ability to achieve these goals.”

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is known for its multidisciplinary approach, combining legal knowledge, government relations, and regulatory advocacy. Their team of over 300 attorneys and policy professionals across 12 offices nationwide has a deep understanding of the intersection of business, law, and policy. This partnership aligns with SPPI’s mission to promote sound public policy solutions that respect the rights of consumers, facilitate more choice in the free market, and support the operational realities of businesses.

SPPI looks forward to working with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck.
